Cmdr. Danny J. Fahler U.S. Navy Ret. passed away surrounded by family on Oct. 7, 2009, at the age of 61 in Albany, N.Y., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Cheboygan and raised in Gaylord, he was the son of Fanny Fahler and the late Arthur J. Fahler.

Cmdr. Fahler’s time in the Navy took him to Wales; Beaufort, S.C.; Hartford, Conn.; Bermuda; and many years spent in the Washington, D.C., area before retiring to Schenectady, N.Y.

Cmdr. Fahler spent 31 years serving our country in the Navy, having risen through the ranks as an enlisted man. He received his Bachelor’s (1980) and Master’s (1990) degrees in Healthcare Services Administration from George Washington University.

Over the course of his career, he served in many capacities including corpsman, administrator and teacher making lifelong friends along the way. He believed strongly in mentoring others and lived by his motto to always do the right thing. After retirement he enjoyed gardening, baking and, of course, spending time with his beloved dogs.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Barbara of Schenectady, N.Y; two children, Amanda Fahler and Mary (G. Andrew) Hogwood of Rockville, Md.; his mother, Fanny Ruth of Gaylord; brothers, Larry of Newburg, Mich., and Ralph (Ginger) of Gaylord; several nieces, nephews and valued friends and colleagues.

The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff of the Infusion, RAD and Hospice units of Albany VA Medical Center.

Tributes to Cmdr. Fahler’s memory may be made to the Albany VA Medical Center or Fisher House at 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.

A funeral Mass was held in Schenectady, N.Y., for family and close friends. Cmdr. Fahler will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in the spring of 2010.
