A Brave Paratrooper

Kenneth was a fine young man and a true Hero for his country. He was a paratrooper in D Co, 3rd Bn, 506th Abn Inf, 101st Abn Div. He died in the late evening hours of 17 Jan 1969. Our platoon was moving between rice paddies and tree lines when we were ambushed by Main Force VC. Kenneth was moving with his squad when a bullet fragment hit him in his back, piercing his heart. He yelled for his squad not to expose themselves to fire to get to him. While other paratroopers of the platoon suppressed the fire Kenneth was recovered. As he was being treated, he looked at us and said "I'm going to die, tell my family that I love them". A few minutes later he died. Kenneth Measell was a brave paratrooper and a Hero of this country who cared about his men and family. Respectfully, Mike Smith, D Co, 3rd Bn, 506th Abn Inf, 101st Abn Div. - Monday, September 27, 1999
